Before ecotourism became a word on every travel brand's homepage, a small village on the edge of the Cardamom Mountains was already doing it.
Chi Phat sits inside one of the largest remaining rainforests in mainland Southeast Asia. Twenty years ago, this area had a serious poaching and logging problem. Today, many of the same families who once relied on hunting and cutting timber are the guides, homestay hosts, and boat drivers who make a living showing travelers the forest instead of taking from it. That shift did not happen by accident. It took years of community organizing, and it is still one of the clearest examples in Cambodia of tourism actually protecting a place instead of wearing it down.
What Makes Chi Phat Different
This is not a resort with a green logo slapped on it. Chi Phat is a community-based tourism model, meaning the village itself runs the guiding, the homestays, and the boat trips. Money spent here stays here. When a guide leads you into the forest, they are not reciting a script, they grew up in it.
The rainforest around Chi Phat is home to gibbons, hornbills, and, if you are very lucky and very quiet, signs of Asian elephants passing through. You will not see all of this on a single trip. That is the point. It is a real ecosystem, not a wildlife park.
Osoam: The Quieter Neighbor
A short distance away, Osoam offers a similar model on a smaller scale. It is a good option if Chi Phat feels a little too well-known and you want something even further off the map. Same principle though, local guides, local homestays, forest that has been protected because people had a reason to protect it.
What a Trip Actually Looks Like
Expect trekking through dense forest, river crossings, and nights in a homestay rather than a hotel. Food is simple and often grown or caught locally. Days can be humid and long. This is not a trip for someone who wants five-star comfort, it is a trip for someone who wants to understand how a rainforest and a community can support each other.
Green season adds another layer here too. The forest is at its thickest and greenest, rivers run higher, and the whole area feels more alive. It also means trails can be muddy, which is part of why going with an experienced local guide matters more here than almost anywhere else on our route list.
Why This Story Matters Beyond the Trip
Cambodia loses forest cover every year to illegal logging and land clearing. Chi Phat is proof that there is another way to make a rainforest valuable, keep it standing and bring people to see it, rather than cut it down and sell the wood. Every traveler who visits and spends money through the community model reinforces that this way of doing things actually works economically, not just morally.
